727. Back to the Future

Back to the Future
1985
Directed by Robert Zemeckis

There is no denying that is a fun and entertaining film but I don't understand why people have become so obsessed with it.  Although I guess people say the same thing about the hype surrounding Star Wars movies.  I just ignore them and go back to sketching the Death Star.

Teenager Marty McFly is friends with Dr. Emmett Brown, who has recently built a time machine, using plutonium stolen from Libyan terrorists.  Naturally, the Libyans come after Brown and kill him.  Marty is able to escape at the last minute to 1955.  Upon arriving he inadvertently alters events, making it unlikely that his parents will meet and fall in love thereby conceiving him.  Marty must find the younger Brown to warn him about the future and make sure that his parents end up together.  And, of course, figure out how to go back to the future.  I don't know why people have such a problem with that title.  It makes sense to me.

There are obviously a ton of plot holes, but that is to be expected with a time travel story.  It's certainly a fun piece of escapism and its iconic nature means it deserves a spot on this List.

RATING: ****-

Interesting Facts:

Eric Stoltz was originally set to play Marty.  He insisted on everybody calling him Marty on set and flirted with Lea Thompson in between takes.
