648. Die Blechtrommel

Die Blechtrommel
The Tin Drum
1979
Directed by Volker Schlondorff

I am making the apology rounds on all my blogs for not posting lately.  I moved and then my long distance boyfriend came to visit me for a couple weeks.  Yesterday I got surgery that will leave me stuck in bed for several months.  At least that means lots and lots of movies!  Unfortunately, it also meant watching this film.

Today I had to take two naps and ended up vomiting once.  Now, I know most of you will blame my surgery, but honestly, I choose to point the finger at this atrocity.  Oskar is the scariest looking baby in the world. As soon as he is born he overhears that he will get a tin drum for his third birthday.  On his third birthday, he decides to stop growing and throws himself down a flight of stairs.  Now for the rest of the movie, we have to watch this bratty kid who can shatter glass with his scream.  He also has several sexual experiences that are just plain disturbing.

I generally hate films that star children and this kid was one of the most annoying children I have ever seen.  I wanted to go all Office Space on that tin drum of his.  There were quite a few images I could have happily gone without seeing.  Don't waste your time on this one.

RATING: **---

Interesting Facts:

Oklahoma County tried to ban this movie because it violated their child pornography laws.  They confiscated the tapes from individuals and rental stores.  Oklahoma always has to take it too far.

  2. There are movies you wish you wouldn't have been exposed to. If this one is one of them for you than it shouldn't be on a list of movies you must see. But most important - get well Amanda. I just landed on this site and felt a connection.
    Take care
