593. The Rocky Horror Picture Show

The Rocky Horror Picture Show
1975
Directed by Jim Sharman

I am constantly told that I am too uptight, mostly by men.  I am sure the sentiment will be repeated when I report that I absolutely hate this film and if anyone ever made me go to a screening, my head would probably explode.

Janet and Brad are newly engaged and find themselves stranded with a flat tire in the middle of a storm.  They seek refuge in a nearby castle that is inhabited by a homicidal transvestite. There a few tolerable songs like "Touch-a Touch-a Touch-a Touch Me" and "Dammit Janet."  There.  That's the nicest thing I will say about it.

I feel like everyone who praises this film has to get their digs in about people who don't like it.  Apparently, it means we don't like fun or anything out of the ordinary.  There are plenty of "wacky" movies that I enjoy, but I just found this almost unwatchable.  I hope you don't throw toast at me or whatever it is you're supposed to do.

RATING: *----

Interesting Facts:

Meat Loaf is in this film.  Oh this just keeps getting worse.

  1. Amanda, I hope you read this reply after my one to 'Bring me the head of ..', because we now head for a disagree .. And, interestingly, after the super testosterone laden Peckinpah, about a film that says there is blurring between extremes of gender stereotype.
Amanda, you know I don't go for musicals .. and I once surprised (disappointed? you) by saying I really like Cabaret.. So, sorry, but I love this...
And, no, this is not at all a dig - to quote you .. "about people who don't like it. Apparently, it means we don't like fun or anything out of the ordinary". You don't like it.. fine. I'm not at all going to write you off as a dull conventional boring person. I even promise not to throw toast at you.

I once shocked you by letting you know I don't drive, but have a motor bike ..can you take that I have been to both film screenings and live performances of RHS? Yes Amanda, I have thrown toast.

I like the 'just good fun'aspect, but alongside having something to say about gender roles and sexuality .. Male / Female, Gay / straight.

And great fun spotting the old movie references - especially in 'Science fiction, Double feature'. ("Dana Andrews said prunes gave him the runes, and solving took incredible skills.. ")

    1. Haha I somehow had the sense that you enjoyed this even though I know you don't like musicals. It seems like if there is a musical I like, you'll hate it and vice versa.

  2. I called it "the epitome of trash" and found that it takes the idea that in a musical the story makes no sense so why not take it to the extreme. A part of me likes the sheer stupidity of it all, but honestly, it is beyond bad.
