442. Giulietta degli spiriti

Giulietta Degli Spiriti
Juliet of the Spirits
1965
Directed by Federico Fellini

Federico, we meet again.  I have never enjoyed anything this man has done and yet I am forced to watch seven of his movies from The Book and come up with individual reasons why I don't like each movie, since I think my readers might face my main reason ("Because Fellini is a giant butthead!) a bit childish.

Juliet believes that her husband is cheating on her so, of course, she does the only rational thing: explores her sexuality with her sexy neighbor, Suzy (did I even have to write that?  I think it was implied).  Anyway, the film mixes fantasy with realism and feels like one of those crazy acid trips that I have always despised.

A lot of people have praised this film for its beauty but for me, it was a bit too much, kind of like Masque of Red Death without the fun.

Sorry for the short review, but I have lots of insignificant busy work to get to!

RATING: **---

Interesting Facts:

Fellini took LSD in preparation for making this movie.  Did I call it or did I call it?

  1. Ok, you've been waaaay too sweet to me lately for me not to come and give you a little blog love.

Sorry you didn't like this one. I, on the other hand, LOVED it. I thought it was one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen and "Satyricon" might look even better, although it's plot is a little trippier and harder to ease into than this, so I'd imagine you'll hate it. That's okay though. I wasn't too crazy about "8 1/2" or "La Dolce Vita".

    1. I would actually take La Dolce Vita any day over this. At least watching La Dolce Vita doesn't make my eyes burn!

  2. I took a pause to see what other Fellini's you had seen Amanda...

Thisone, in all honesty I'm not sure if I can recall clearly enough to comment on..

But I adored 'Nights of Cabiria' and 'La Strada'.

Let us all agree to pretend 'Satyricon' never happened? It was a bad dream we all somehow shared?

  3. We agree pretty well on Fellini. This movie just show what a jackass he was. He is basically telling his wife that she should accept his affairs and that essentially it is her own fault.
