284. Artists and Models

Artists and Models
1955
Directed by Frank Tashlin

Oh Lord, spare us.  A Jerry Lewis movie.  I mean, I knew it was coming, I just….I thought I had more time.

Many years ago, I innocently got Cinderfella for me and my sister to watch for a movie night.  I didn't realize what Jerry Lewis was back then.  So young.  So naive.  My sister and I watched in horror as Jerry Lewis acted mentally retarded in order to garner laughs.  We shut it off after a half hour.

Now, a fresh horror is upon me once more.  I feel like the sheriff in My Bloody Valentine when Harry Warden started killing everyone again after they thought he was dead.  He's back in my life, everybody.

Jerry Lewis is not funny and extremely obnoxious.  And he is just offensive to me.  This time, he stars as a nutcase who yells out comic book ideas in his sleep that Dean Martin sells for profit.  Oh, and Shirley Maclaine is annoying in this as well.

Yuck.  And we still have Nutty Professor to come.  DAH DAH DAH!

RATING: -----

Interesting Facts:

Enough said.

  1. This review was hilarious! I actually felt kind of panicked watching this. Like...how can I get out of watching these? I don't want to! Why did I take on this commitment??!

    I hate Jerry Lewis.

  2. OOOoohhh this is fun.
Thanks Rachel for dragging this pile of crap from the vaults...I've been a bit bored with some films that we've gone "Well, that was an OK film.."
We can have a highly enjoyable loathfest... To quote you directly "Jerry Lewis is not funny and extremely obnoxious." yep. that pretty much sums him up. The only point i'd disagree with on is when you go on to say "And he is just offensive to me. " nope. he is offensive to me as well.

Is this the one where he is some sort of boarding house for women? Where he can spend the entire Beep movie leching and pulling silly faces? I've no idea.. I think there were at least three of these revolting things in the book... And they all felt the same. Somehow they felt much more objectionable than even '7 brides'

All that said, please don't hate me for a minor breaking of ranks .. he was very good and effective in 'King of Comedy'

    1. Ray, is King of Comedy in the book? I've heard of it but I didn't realize Lewis was in it. I'm nervous for what else is in store...

  3. Hi Rachel, Yes, 'King of Comedy' is in the book .. but don't worry about it.It is most certainly NOT a 'Jerry Lewis' film .. it is many, many years later than his normal era (1980's) and not playing his usual 'zany' character. Here he plays an eldery celeb who is being bothered by fanRobert deNiro.
But there are a couple other 'normal' Lewis films out there lurking in the pages.

  4. Amanda, a small apology .. for misreading / misundersatnding your sentance "And he is just offensive to me" .. My first reading was that he was offensive just to you .. in the way Jerry Lewis made it his life long aim to be offensive to you personaly and no-one else. On re reading next day I see that you were saying that the only thing Jerry Lewis is, is offensive... . Get it now. My fault. And I agree.

  5. Don't worry Ray, I liked King of Comedy too. Although I think that movie would have been just as good with another actor. And thanks Rachel!

  6. I will join the Jerry Lewis hate club. Man, he was annoying in this one. If you read my review you will find out just how much I despise his particular form of comedy.
Only disagreement is on Shirley MacLaine. She is always good, also here.

  7. You know what? I didn't mind this. Or Jerry himself. I get that what he does is very talented, even if it's not my type of thing.

I can see that people who perform like this are usually doing their own schtick which they rarely deviate from, rather than playing a role. And if you see it repeatedly then it would get tiresome. But this is the first time I've actually seen him (other than King of Comedy which, as discussed, is totally different) so I'm willing to take it on face value for now.

And here he's backed up by the talent of Dean Martin and Shirley MacLaine plus a pretty witty script. In a solo film that also could become annoying. But, again, I'm willing to take this on face value.

    1. This certainly isn't as bad as like Cinderfella (did I just admit to seeing that?) but I hate him so much I couldn't enjoy it. Maybe if this had been my first one it would have been easier.
