192. Great Expectations

Great Expectations
1946
Directed by David Lean

I cannot even tell you how many times I have started this book and never finished it.  I almost know the beginning by heart, having started it over so many times.  I hate Charles Dickens but I own his complete works.  Why?  No idea.

Well, anyway, I didn't have high hopes for this film.  However, instead of focusing on the dull parts that Dickens focused on, David Lean instead highlighted the more gothic elements of the book.  Also, this movie has Obi Wan Kenobi.  Can it get any better than that?

All right, so there is still a slight trademark boring element that is essential for any Dickens adaptation (except perhaps Oliver and Company).  It wasn't as bad as it could have been, though.

RATING: ***--

Interesting Facts:

Good story for unrequited love.

Alec Guiness' first speaking role in films.

  1. How did you manage to get through the Dickens books on the book list. I know I am dreading them and this movie did not make me any more optimistic.

    1. It was tough! The only one I really, really liked was David Copperfield. I'm just glad the Pickwick Papers wasn't on the List.

  2. I just watched this today- I really enjoyed it. Although I was a bit shocked when he went from just looking like a kid to suddenly...John Mills looking about 40 when only 6 years had meant to go past! But anyway I thought everyone gave good performances and I soon forgot about the age thing!

I am spectacularly not well read at all so I didn't even know what the story was about I'm ashamed to say but I ended up loving it...maybe I will have to give the book a go haha!

    1. Yes I would check it out. It's pretty manageable as far as Dickens novels go. Maybe you try the 1001 book list!

  3. Haha- no I could never...reading 2 books a year is a lot for me :D

But I will try Great Expectations. I liked A Tale of Two Cities but it was a long time ago when I read it...
