83. L'Atalante

L'Atalante
1934

Wow, I feel cheated.  This isn't the first time this has happened during this journey.  I am not too pissed about James Cameron's plagiarism because Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio really made the scene their own.  I am surprised, though, that no one ever told me about this.  One of hipsters' favorite past times is to bag on Titanic

A lot of critics call this the best film ever made.   I really don't think it deserves that much praise.  I did not hate it, but the best movie ever?  I also have a grudge against Jean Vigo after Zero de Conduite.

This movie is about two lovers who live on a ship.  They annoy everyone else because they are either making out or fighting.  It is supposed to be an amazing love story, but honestly, the characters annoyed the hell out of me.  The acting wasn't great either.  Overall, it does not live up to the hype.

  1. How could it be on the AFI list? It isn't American.

  2. That sounds quite a condemnatory review.. but you still gave a fairly high three.. so something must have hit the right spots for you.

I liked this, quite a bit.. well, maybe a slight shortening may have helped.. but a hit for me. maybe just because of the bit with the cats in.

And to my shame, I hadn't spotted the similarity in poses before, so thanks for bringing that to my attention.

    1. Haha you really have a thing for cats.

Honestly, I can't remember why I would have put three stars for a movie that I seemed to hate so much (this was like three years ago). Maybe I had watching a few bad movies before and my standards were low?

  3. With Zero... in mind this is a stellar movie. By all other standards it is just passable. I have never figured oout what is the thing with Vigo. Critics swoon over him, but I don't.

  4. It was OK, and it grew on me as it went on. Lots of very well worked out camera shots. But not really seeing why this rides so high in so many best-ever lists.
