561. American Graffiti

American Graffiti
1973
Directed by George Lucas

I know it is an extremely unpopular opinion to dislike anything that George Lucas touches, but I found this movie to be an incredible bore.  Angsty teens living in a small town...where have we seen that before?  I didn't like it in The Last Picture Show and I didn't like it here.  I prefer my bildungsroman to come from Dickens, thanks.

Teenage boys aren't content with their accessible girlfriends so they chase impossible ideals.  I don't have to watch this on the big screen; I went to high school.  As a side note, I swear I saw James Franco in this one.  Don't ask me how, but he was there.

So like I said, this film is a bit of a drag.  Maybe men will better relate to this film but I found all the characters obnoxious and the main character's dilemma absolutely insane.

Wanted to like it, but just couldn't manage it.

RATING: **---

Interesting Facts:

Shot in sequence.

George Lucas missed his high school reunion to work on this film.

#62 in AFI's top 100.

  1. You get an agreement from me, but only because I find films about stroppy, obnoxious and frequenty offensive teens a bore anyway.

  3. I just watched this...I really liked it a lot- I thought it had a ton of charm! I also really liked The Last Picture Show... Plus the music was great and the cars were pretty cool. I really loved Richard Dreyfuss in this film. It was certainly about a billion miles away from my life as a teenager but that's what makes it fun I guess! Haha!

  4. Diana / Amanda .. Oh, this was supposed to be funny??? OK, well, maybe I mis-understood it then.. 'Last picture show' .. if I'm remembering correctly, was much better. Yes, the teens were probably just as 'angsty', but much less obnoxious & offensive.

  5. Ashley, it's so funny how we have the exact opposite movie tastes. I guess I just failed to see the charm in their actions, but perhaps that has more to do with my own distaste for teenaged boys as a species. I didn't like the Last Picture Show either.

  7. I was also very happy watching this one, sorry Amanda. I did not cruise around in a car in my youth and my romantic exploits were practically non-existent, yet I got caught up in the youthful energy on display here.
