150. The Palm Beach Story

The Palm Beach Story
1942
Directed by Preston Sturges

This is a really great film; I would rank it along with Bringing Up Baby.  Good thing I like Preston; this book is absolutely obsessed with him.

This movie is about a woman who wants to divorce her husband so she starts to seduce a rich guy.  But maybe she still has feelings for her husband??!!?!  Implausible situations ensue.

I really enjoyed this movie.  It felt very fresh.  I am still used to divorce being risque with this movies and it is an interesting new concept to start showing in films.  Sturges is always good for some double entendres. Check it out.

RATING: ****-

Interesting Facts:

Carole Lombard was originally going to star in this movie but she died in a plane crash.

  1. It is funny how being immersed in this world for so long makes us get used to the conventions of the time. Like we are so scandalized to see things. Even the original title is so risque!

    2. Hang on a minute, reading the plot outline on Wikipedia, it says that the revelation at the end that they each have identical twins thus explains the opening sequence showing that each of them had been kidnapped by their twin before the wedding, who were hoping to marry the 'real' partner. But because both were successful they got their comeuppance by ending up married to the other imposter. Was that clear to anyone else who watched the film?

At the risk of staring too deeply into the details here, how does that stack up? Did no one think it strange that neither sibling turned up for the wedding? Why didn't the real couple (who were actually in love with each other) say something afterwards? Even if they didn't want to legally challenge it, surely they must have known that their real betrothed remained unmarried, so why not marry them? Especially when they're all such good friends years later that they have a triple ceremony together.
