10. Körkarlen

 Körkarlen
The Phantom Carriage

I feel really bad that I continually say that I do not like these movies.  I mean, I sound like such a brat.  Here are pictures that changed cinema forever and I have to be the bitchy person from the generation of Disney who denounces them.  Yet silent films like this one are boring.  They are BORING!!! You can appreciate the camera angles, the score, the innovations, the techniques until you drop dead but are you really ever 100% entertained? Hell no.

This movie is very Christmas Carol. The man looks back at his life and sees what a mess it is.  Shall I start my rant on Charles Dickens?  No, I think I will spare you that.   The score for this movie is impressive but like I said BORING!  Is it time for Moulin Rouge yet?

RATING: **---

Interesting Facts:

Sometimes called the first horror movie.  However, we 1001 folk know that that was The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

It was kind of cool how they made the souls come out of the bodies.  We see that all time in modern movies.

I am sorry I have been whining (although I don't feel too bad because I have like zero followers).  I am going to watch some movies with dialogue (which in my opinion is the best part of the movie) so I don't get so cranky next time.

Here is the first part of the movie on Youtube:

  1. Hmmm... I actually liked this one. It is gloomy as hell, but interesting. I do see your point with the Dickens reference.

    2. If it becomes annoying please let me know.
I like to read what other people have experienced going through the process and you are one of the few who have doen it chronologically. I will probably read them all, but promise to only comment if I have something useful to write.

    3. It's not annoying at all! I love it! And comment as often as you like! Do you know any other blogs that are going chronologically? I haven't been able to really find any!

    4. Now that you mention it, no, I have not found any. Many start out chronologically, but change strategy around the 100 movie mark.

  2. Sorry Amanda, I really liked this one. I trust that now you have followers you are feeling less cranky? (But just 'not liking' a film isn't necessarily being cranky)

  3. I started doing this chronologically a year ago, but it's a slow process (job, family etc) so only up to 1931 thus far.

Anyway, thought I'd add my voice to th support of this film which I found pretty well rounded and attention-holding. Especially after all those DW Griffith films had me clawing my own eyes out in frustration as the clocked ticked into the third hour...

  6. The reviews are great - don't be like one of those artists who runs away from their early work! I like them because they equally reflect the journey and how you feel encountering the films rather than just critiquing the film itself. I have a few friends who counted the number of films from the book they've watched in a spreadsheet we all share, but even they think I'm mad for doing this, starting on page one. It's great to find a small support group to share the experience with.
